A pharmaceutical company was found guilty of overcharging the police in North Wales last week following a report by a drug maker that it had a supply of Viagra.
Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer said on Wednesday it would pay a fine of £2.4bn (US$1.4bn) for a dossier about an erectile dysfunction drug, which it is said to have supplied to the police.
The drug maker said the case was “large,” and it was “not in the best interest” of the company, the court heard.
The drugs that the pharmaceutical giant said had been supplied in a supply of Viagra were called ‘Viagra’ or ‘Sildenafil’ (a drug with a different name and generic name, sildenafil).
Pfizer said in a statement it had been aware of the case and had sent an email to all suppliers and manufacturers of the drugs that the firm was aware of.
“Pfizer, the maker of Viagra and sildenafil, has received an inquiry from the Department of Justice and is being investigated by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA),” a spokesperson said.
The statement said Pfizer had been “aware of the circumstances in which the information was supplied to the Department of Justice” but “has not received the material that it was supplied to the Department”.
It said the pharmaceutical company had “known of the existence of the case and that it had been aware of the matter.”
It added that the company had informed the Department of Justice that the information had been provided to the MHRA.
Pfizer’s spokesman said: “The Department of Justice has investigated the matter and is currently pursuing the matter with the MHRA.“Pfizer is a global pharmaceutical company that is part of the biopharmaceutical industry.”
